Ms. Kazue Lowenstein continues to work as a volunteer with Parents Helping Parents (PHP), an organization dedicated to providing support services to families of children with special needs. Over time she became aware of the particular challenges faced by Japanese families of children with special needs who were residing in the Bay Area. Away from their families and home communities, the Japanese had to deal with both language barriers and cultural differences. Thus, in 1996 Ms. Lowenstein established a new branch of PHP, the Japanese Support Group. In recognition of her ongoing contribution and dedication to PHP Japanese Support Group and the local community, Ms. Lowenstein was honored with the Japanese Consul General's Commendation on February 14, 2006.
